Objectives

For the past 25 years, ever since the Economic Reform and Opening, China’s economic growth has continued at an average of approximately 10%. It is no exaggeration to say that this has been achieved at a cost of environmental issues. Rapid economic growth leads to confrontations not only with the existing problems of pollution, such as air pollution, poor water quality, and soil contamination, but also at the same time to modern problems such as desertification, biosphere protection (environmental protection), and global warming. Meanwhile, state involvement in the environment, such as the provision of environmental laws since the 1980s, looks to be tied to such fruits as the progress of partial environmental improvements. However, when we consider that environmental issues are notmerely technical, but also caused by society, the various problems involving Chinese politics, economics, and society, and their makeup, are the same.

This symposium not only clarifies the current state of Chinese environmental issues from the three aspects ofhistory, economics, and politics and society by bringing into play the characteristics of modern local Chinese researchbases in various disciplines, but also ascertains the future of Chinese environmental issues.
